This was a really neat opportunity for me. We spent the summer scuba diving the coral reefs measuring the amount of live and dead coral and compared the results to previous survey findings. We were researching human impacts to the coral reef. The summer before my senior year of college I had the opportunity to participate in a research project in the U.S. I was a geology major, but I wasnt sure what I wanted to do after college. This research would not be possible without the help of her colleagues, students, collaborators, and more than 25 volunteer citizen scientists. Her microplastic research focuses on microplastics found in snowy peaks, to downstream lakes and rivers, and to drinking water taps. After years of studying caves in the Bahamas and ice cores from Antarctica, now she studies microplastics from peak to tap. In her research, Monica uses chemical tools to understand how humans have impacted the environment. She earned a doctoral degree in Marine Geology and Geophysics from the University of Miami. In recording these stories, Hirschfeld developed prescient hypotheses, including the existence of gender and sexuality spectra.Monica Arienzo is an Associate Research Professor in the Division of Hydrologic Sciences at the Desert Research Institute. was basically hanging out in bars and getting to know the queer and trans community,” Gill-Peterson says. In 1919, he founded the Institute for Sexual Research in Berlin to establish sexual science as its own discipline and to provide sexual health services to the community.Īt the institute, Hirschfeld conducted extensive research on gender and sexuality, amassing a library of more than 20,000 books and manuscripts. After witnessing several of his gay patients commit suicide, Hirschfeld, a gay man, left his practice to advocate for gender and sexual minorities. In early-1900s Germany, homosexuality was illegal. But according to Jules Gill-Peterson, a historian at Johns Hopkins University, the word transgender as we use it today, to refer to people whose gender identities do not align with the sex they were assigned at birth, “is a contemporary, Western concept” popularized in part by German physician Magnus Hirschfeld around the turn of the 20th century. Recorded trans history can be traced back at least 4,500 years, to ancient Sumerian texts documenting priests known as gala who may have been transgender.
